IMS MUSEUM HISTORY
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
Photo History
A new museum was constructed and opened in 1976.

It is located inside the infield at the south end of the speedway.

It is open to the public everyday but Dec 25th.  Tours of the museum and the track are available.

Prior to a $60 million upgrade, which closed the museum from (Nov 2023-March 2025,) the main
floor held the museum and gift shop.  The upstairs level held offices and a photo shop that was
open to the public
. A basement held the many cars not currently on display and was off limits.

The museum reopened April 2, 2025.

There is now 40,000 square feet of additional space—including the basement, and a newly
added mezzanine which features artifacts on view for the first time.

The Museum is more family-friendly, with interactive, immersive, and educational exhibits.
There are also activities such as racing simulators and a pit stop challenge.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened the Museum in 1956.

The mission of the museum is to preserve and celebrate the history behind the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500.

The Museum is a not-for-profit and a separate entity from the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway. It was not included in the purchase of the speedway by Roger Penske
in 2020.

The original museum was located outside of
the track at the corner of 16th Street and
Georgetown Road.  (The IMS Ticket Office is
now at that location.)

Here are some images of the original museum
