Where to Smoke in Indianapolis

To begin, let's look at the Indiana State law on smoking which took effect
July 1, 2012. These smoking rules apply to the entire State.
• You cannot smoke in restaurants.
• You cannot smoke in most public places or places of employment.
• Smokers should stand 8 feet from the entrance to public places.
Smoking is allowed in:
• Bars and taverns
• Tobacco retail shops
• Cigar bars
• Hookah bars
• State licensed gaming facilities
• Licensed horse track facilities
• Membership clubs
However, whether the above places allow smoking depends upon the laws of
the county as well as the owners of the facility, which can enforce stiffer laws.
INDIANAPOLIS adopted a tougher smoking ban.
Indianapolis does not allow smoking in bars, except for cigar bars.
Smoking is banned on the entire property of the Indianapolis International
Airport. They have no smoking lounge!
INDY EXCEPTIONS: (with details further down)
• the town of Beech Grove, located on the south-east side of the city does
allow smoking in all bars in the town and all the bars allow it.
• The town of Fishers is located next to Indianapolis on the north east side,
and allows smoking in bars, however only a few choose to allow it.
• The town of Greenwood located next to Indianapolis on the south side allows
smoking in bars, however only one chooses to allow it. The entire county
though allows it and their are other bars further south, such as in Whiteland
and Franklin.
• The town of Avon is located next to Indianapolis on the west side,
and allows smoking in bars, however only a few choose to allow it.
• You can smoke pipes, cigars, cigarettes, etc. at the Indy Speedway
whenever you are outside, including the garage area and pits, until 2018
when they began forbidding smoking in the grand stands.
• Most taxis in Indianapolis say they are non-smoking, however I have found
most drivers let you smoke.
• There are smoking balconies at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where many
concerts and NBA basketball games are held.
• You can exit a gate to smoke at the back of the Victory Field where the
Indianapolis Indians play baseball.
• Some bars and restaurants have patios where they allow smoking.
Indianapolis Cigar Bars:
Technically I do not think you are supposed to smoke
cigarettes in Indianapolis Cigar or Hookah bars. I'm
guessing our lawmakers are attempting to keep things
fair for all the other regular bars where they've outlawed
this legal product.

Indianapolis Bars With Smoking Patios There are many, here are a few...
The Chatterbox Jazz Club 435 Massachusetts Avenue Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 317-636-0584 Located downtown along Mass Ave, where there are many good restaurants and bars. It is one of the rare places to see live Jazz music. The condition of the bar is likely the roughest in town and the art and decor seems to have been up for a century - it's like a dive bar that hasn't had a repair since 1940, which contrasts with the cool music. I love it. There is no food, except some frozen pizza. David, the owner, is often there collecting money at the door, even if you are going to hang out outside where he has tables and chairs as well as heaters and waitress service. A good spot to watch the crowds stroll by at night while enjoying a cocktail and a smoke. You can't hear the music as well outside, but thanks to the large window, you can see the backs of the musicians.
A bar 39 West Jackson Place (actually on Meridian Street at Union Station) Indianapolis, IN 46225 (317) 636-0100 Dance clubs Patio is high above the sidewalk where you can watch the partiers go by.

Hotels
When I go to a town that has a no-smoking policy for their hotels,
I look for hotels that have balconies. This way I can step outside and
smoke which is better than nothing.
Unfortunately, Indy hotels with balconies are very limited, but there
are a few:
