List of All U.S.
Open-wheel
Race Champions
In 1909 the American Automobile Association (AAA) established
the national driving championship and became the first sanctioning
body for auto racing in the United States.  That same year, races
began to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

In 1956, the United States Auto Club (USAC) was founded to take
over sanctioning from the AAA which ceased sanctioning auto
racing in the general outrage over motor racing safety.

USAC controlled the championship until 1979 when a group of
disenchanted race team owners started their own series called
\Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART).  While USAC
continued to sanction the Indy 500, people called the CART cars
Indy cars.

Tony George, president of the IMS, started the Indy Racing League
(IRL) in 1996 in direct competition with CART.  CART began
boycotting the Indy 500, and began referring to their cars as
Champ Cars, instead of Indy Cars.

CART collapsed, going bankrupt in 2003.  Another group of team
owners purchased it and renamed it Champ Car.  They went
bankrupt before the 2008 season and the race teams either quit or
joined the IRL, which everyone now calls IndyCar.
