Jim Clark, British Formula 1 champion, won the 1965 Indy 500,
becoming the first winner in 49 years that was not American.
The Governor's (Coronation) Ball was held Friday evening at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.
It was televised. The newspaper reported that the 32 princesses had difficulty during
their introduction with the bright camera lights. Princess Sharon Gustavel was elected
"Miss Congeniality" by the princesses.
The ballroom was decorated with 10,000 peonies.
Attendance was 1,400 and included celebrities such as Fess Parker, Jerry Van Dyke,
Alan Hale JR., Connie Stevens and Jimmie Dean. These actors were also in the parade
the next day along with astronaut Gus Grissom, Walter Cronkite and Jimmy Stewart,
who was the grand marshal.
The theme of the parade was "Showtime USA." Hundreds of thousand of parade
spectators joined the 35,314 who had reserved seats. Along with the floats and
marching bands were hundreds of horses including the St. Louis Clydedales.
19-year-old Suzanne Devine was a
sophmore at Indiana University, majoring
in business and active in the YWCA,
Little Sigma, Young Republicans and
I.U. Sailing and Riding clubs.
