Race Car Changes for 2024
|
100 lbs have been stripped out of the car and a new, lightweight aeroscreen further reduces the
weight.
IndyCar's 2.2-Liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engines will have new hybrid technology in 2024 which
adds some of the weight back. A motor generator unit (MGU) will be fitted to the rear of the car
where the starter used to be. A super-capacitor will be installed in the bell housing to store energy
from braking (ERS) to provide power to the MGU. The new hybrid system will provide up to an
additional 150 H.P., replacing the 60 H.P. Indy cars got from the older "push-to-pass" system. The
cars will now be able to start on their own which will eliminate cautions where drivers stall on track
and have to be recovered. The hybrid system is expected to add a new level of strategy as drivers
contemplate braking for the energy regeneration.
