Original Indy Track plan
When originally designing the Indianapolis speedway, an infield road course was planned.
However, no need for it was ever found until 1998 when Formula One decided to race at Indy.
The new roadcourse, completed in 2000, does not look as ingenious as this 100 year old drawing.

This photo shows the 16th Street Speedway which was located across
16th street from Turn 2 of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
This 1/4-mile asphalt track featured Midget Racing from 1946-1958.

The highlight of the year was the popular "Night Before the 500" program.

Indy 500 drivers such as Sam Hanks, A.J. Foyt, Duke Nalon, Johnnie Parsons,
Troy Ruttman and Eddie Sachs competed there.

You can also see part of 16th Street Speedway in the next photo.
